VIRTUAL PROGRAMS

Creature Feature - Elementary School

In this video series aimed at younger audiences, we’ll introduce a marine organism, read a story book, and then meet the critter up close. Support material is available to accompany these lessons including a response to literature graphic organizer (fiction, nonfiction or poem) and a related STEAM activity.

Science Notebook - Middle School, High School

In this video series, we take a deep dive into the biology of local organisms through guided science notebook entries. We’ll introduce the animals and then draw them, labelling important features and recording questions.

Virtual Field Trips - Middle School, High School

Join us virtually in the field! Your students will see and learn about our field locations, and then access and analyze scientific data from those locations.

Here a Fish, There a Fish - Poquonnock River This virtual field trip examines the nearshore fish population along the Poquonock River. Summer campers collected information about fish diversity and abundance using seine nets.

Where Did the Seals Go? - Examine Project O's seal population data collected by students in Fishers Island Sound. Choose from a variety of research questions about the relationship between seal abundance and the weather and water conditions.

Mystery Water - Two Project O scientists collected water samples from the three different locations for an important study, but the labels on their water samples washed away.  We need you to help us figure out where each sample was collected.

Introduction to Oceanography - Our Marine Educators will take you virtually aboard our research vessel, the Enviro-Lab, as they explore and study the Long Island Sound Estuary focusing on both biotic and abiotic factors!

Thames River Water Quality: An Oyster Growers DilemmaDecide where you would start your own oyster farm by scouting out possible locations based on what you learn about water conditions in the Thames River.

New London Ledge Light House - Join Captain Brae for a tour of the New London Ledge Light House. Learn all about the history of this light house.

Secrets of the MarshDive into the marsh with Project Oceanology scientists!  In this virtual field trip, we’ll learn about the marsh ecosystem and how it is connected to terrestrial and marine systems.

Animal AdaptationsTake a look at what was hauled in on our otter trawl nets, and help us accurately identify the specimens using a dichotomous key.

Shorebird ScientistsLearn all about shorebirds and their environment in this interactive activity. Sections available for kindergarten through high school.

Game of Floods - Learn about how flooding affects different areas of town now, and how that might change as a result of climate change.

Facebook Live

Plankton (3/26/2020)Kyle and Marissa to live on Facebook from the Project O dock to talk about plankton. They caught plankton and then looked at them live under the microscope.

Rocky Intertidal Zone (3/31/2020)Debbie and Callie explore the Rocky Intertidal Zone for organisms that are well-adapted for a dynamic habitat!

Local & Invasive Crab Species (4/2/2020)Kyle and Marissa talk about local crab species and how some of them are invasive species that came from the other side of the world.

Hallville Pond Fishway (4/6/2020)Dr. Molly talks with Dan Mullins of the Eastern Connecticut Conservation District and Steve Gephardt of CT DEEP about the Hallville Pond fishway in Preston!

Lobster Pot Part 1: Setting the trap and water quality (4/7/2020)Callie and Debbie set a trap to catch creatures, and test the water quality of the estuary!

Density & Oceans (4/9/2020)Marissa creates a liquid density model, and Kyle demonstrates how density creates motion in the world's oceans!

Bonus Density Experiments An up close walk through that goes over all five experiments that were done during the Facebook live video that was recorded 4/9/2020. This video will show you what the correct outcome was supposed to be for each experiment as well as a description of how to do each experiment at home.

Lobster Pot Part 2: Pulling up the trap and collecting data (4/14/2020) - Callie and Debbie pull the lobster pots they set last week to see what's inside! Since the feed cut out during broadcast, enjoy bonus footage of the Project O educators collecting data on the organisms in the trap.

Anatomy of Local Fish in Long Island Sound: Form & Function (4/16/2020)Molly and Kyle look at six different fish species found in Long Island Sound. Learn how their body form can relate to the function of that species. Looking closely at tail shape, body shape and mouth can give you hints into the lives and behaviors of these animals.

Watersheds and Microplastics (4/21/2020)Callie and Debbie teach about the Long Island Sound watershed, create a model watershed, discuss runoff, and microplastics in the ocean

Earth Week Clean-Up 1 (4/22/2020) - Debbie cleans in the Quinebaug River watershed in Jewett City. Learn about how to protect your watershed.

Earth Week Clean-Up 2 (4/22/2020) - Callie cleans in the Hoadley Creek watershed in Branford. Learn about storm drains... where do they go and how do they help the watershed?

Earth Week Clean-Up 3 (4/22/2020) Marissa cleans in the Willimantic River and Shetucket River watershed in Windham. Learn about wastewater treatment plants and how trash in the watershed can lead to reduced water quality.

Earth Week Clean-Up 4 (4/22/2020) - Molly cleans the Thames River watershed in Ledyard. Learn about different types of trash and how long they take to biodegrade.

Earth Week Clean-Up 5 (4/22/2020) - Kyle cleans the Yantic River watershed in Norwich. Learn about point-source pollution and how we can be proud of cleaning up Connecticut's rivers.

Gull Rookery and Marine Debris (4/23/2020) - Kyle and Marissa visit South Dumpling island in Fishers Island Sound to count seabirds, clean the beach and inspect the impact of marine debris on nests.

Harbor Seals (4/28/2020) Debbie and Callie visit Harbor Seals in Fishers Island Sound. Learn about these marine mammals and how their adaptations help them survive in cold water.

Algae (4/30/2020) - Marissa talks all about algae, how we use it without knowing it and how you can celebrate science in your back yard!

Tonging (5/5/2020) Callie and Debbie tong for bivalves in the Poquonnock River!
