SUMMARY:2027 Homeschool Series: Ocean Investigator\, ages 9–12
DESCRIPTION:March Week 3: Bycatch\nBycatch is a serious problem for many marine fisheries. In this engineering challenge focused on fisheries and conservation\, participants learn about bycatch and then design fishing nets that will maximize catch of a target species while minimizing bycatch. We’ll test the nets in a fishing competition\, then redesign them to improve performance. Discussion will include examples drawn from fisheries management. \nLearning Outcome: Understand the concept of bycatch and its impact on the marine ecosystem. Apply engineering design principles to construct and redesign a model fishing net. \nAges: 9–12 \nCost: $40 per class. SUMMARY:Scouting Event with Project Oceanology
DESCRIPTION:Scouts set sail on an Introduction to Oceanography boat cruise and dive into hands-on lab work to earn their Oceanography Merit Badge! \nScouts will literally and figuratively get their hands wet as they investigate the living and nonliving components of Long Island Sound\, while participating in our flagship environmental monitoring program aboard the Enviro-Lab Research Vessel. Scouts will study living organisms in the stern of the boat by hauling a trawl net\, doing a plankton tow and pulling a lobster pot. In the bow of the boat\, they’ll learn how to use a wide range of oceanographic equipment as they investigate physical and chemical aspects of the estuary\, including temperature\, salinity\, dissolved oxygen\, turbidity\, pH\, and CO2. \nIn the lab\, scouts will make their own plankton net\, collect a sample and observe plankton under the microscope. Scouts will also investigate the underwater topography of the sea floor. \nTo prepare for this trip: Participants should wear closed toed shoes and dress for the weather. Remember\, it’s typically colder and windier by the water. Dressing in layers is recommended. Bring a lunch or snack to enjoy during the break. Life jackets will be provided. \nRegister HereEvent Details\nProgram Date: Saturday\, April 24\, 2027 \nProgram Duration — Participants in Session 1:\nBoat: 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM\nLunch: 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM\nLab: 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM \nProgram Duration — Participants in Session 2:\nLab: 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM\nLunch: 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM\nBoat: 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM \n \nProgram Cost: $90.00 per Participant (Scouts and Adults) \nParticipant Ages: Scouts Ages 11-17 (Scouts must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or troop leader.) \nHow to Earn Your Oceanography Merit Badge with Project Oceanology\nIf you’re working toward the Oceanography Merit Badge\, here’s what you’ll need to do: \n\nBring your blue card: Each scout should arrive with a merit badge application card (blue card) filled out with their name\, address\, and troop number.\nInclude a return envelope: Please also bring a self‑addressed\, stamped envelope.\nSubmit your card: Leave your completed blue card with your Project Oceanology instructor on the day of your program.\n\nOne of the final requirements for the badge is Requirement #8: writing a 500‑word essay about your experience aboard Project Oceanology’s research vessel. Since most scouts won’t finish this essay before leaving\, it should be emailed afterward to Project Oceanology’s merit badge counselor at projecto@oceanology.org. \nOnce your essay has been submitted and reviewed\, the merit badge counselor will mail your signed blue card back to you using the envelope you provided.
