Energy Scientists: Test-a-Blade Wind Power
Overview
Test different shapes, sizes, and materials to determine which combination will make the most efficient wind turbine design.
Highlights
Program Duration: 1.25 Hours
Trip Season: Sept-June
Student Limit: Up to 25
Science Standard: PS3-4, ESS3-1, ETS1-1, ETS1-2, ETS1-3
Trip Description
Wind Power energy generation is a growing industry in southeastern New England. In this lab, students will conduct an experiment to test variables in turbine blade design, such as pitch, blade length, blade number, and others. Students will use their data to draw conclusions about which variables have the greatest effect on power output.
Labs taught at Project Oceanology take place over 2.5 hours so this program plus one additional lab of your choosing will be taught.
Labs taught at your location will take place during the school day. The timing will depend on the number of classes/sections in your grade level or course. One lab program is taught per visit.
