Program Duration: 1.25 Hours
Trip Season: Sept-June
Student Limit: Up to 25
Science Standard: LS1-4
Trip Description
Seals are warm-blooded mammals that need to maintain a constant body temperature for survival. Harbor seals in Long Island Sound have adaptations that allow them to stay warm through the cold winter months. In this activity, students use oatmeal models to quantify the effect of body size and shape on heat loss.
Labs taught at Project Oceanology take place over 2.5 hours so this program plus one additional lab of your choosing will be taught.
Labs taught at your location will take place during the school day. The timing will depend on the number of classes/sections in your grade level or course. One lab program is taught per visit.
