Ian joined Project Oceanology in 2003 as a part-time Marine Science Educator. Since then, he has gained experience in navigation, boat and fleet management, both with Project Oceanology and Interport Pilot Agency, and in 2006 he obtained his USCG 100GRT Master’s License. He became the full time captain of our fleet of vessels in 2008.
Ian grew up in Lebanon, CT, and was always fascinated by the water, scouring for animals and treasures. After graduating from high school, he joined the army and served in the U.S. Army (1990-1994) and the CT Army National Guard (1994-1997). After his time in the service, he pursued a bachelors of arts in Coastal Studies at UCONN Avery Point. His time with UCONN brought him here to Project Oceanology- and he’s been here ever since.
In his free time, Ian enjoys history, and is a civil war re-enactor. He loves to spend time outdoors, fishing, and hunting. If not at work, he can also be found spending time with his family, including his cats Whiskey and Rami.
What do you love most about Project Oceanology?
I love that my office is out on the water. Each time we bring students out on the boat, physically on the water, we introduce them to Long Island Sound, giving them the opportunity to explore first hand what amazing things are here in Connecticut waters. It connects them to their community and promotes environmental stewardship within the next generation.
What marine animal is your favorite?
A striped bass! They are a migratory species, and when they arrive to Long Island Sound, it signals to us on the water summer’s here!
