J. Andrew Ely

Executive Director

Andrew Ely joined Project Oceanology as Executive Director in January 2022, following a 28-year career in the United States Coast Guard. His service centered on search and rescue, environmental protection, and interagency operations—experiences that now shape his leadership of Project Oceanology’s mission to spark curiosity about the ocean and inspire future scientists.

Andrew’s passion for the marine environment began in the early 1990s while studying Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island. During that time, he sailed with the Sea Education Association aboard the S.S.V. Westward in the Caribbean, conducting research on oil pollution and developing an appreciation for ocean stewardship. He holds an M.S. in Quality Systems Management from the National Graduate School, an M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, an M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Connecticut, and a B.A. in History and Social Science from Thomas Edison State University.

In addition to his leadership at Project Oceanology, Andrew serves as a Connecticut Vice Chair for the Long Island Sound Partnership Citizens Advisory Committee and volunteers with several regional organizations focused on conservation and community engagement.

Outside of his professional work, Andrew enjoys boating, camping, and time with his family.

What do you love most about Project Oceanology?

Inspiring curiosity in students is the most rewarding part of this work. Watching them discover marine life or explore Long Island Sound for the first time is a reminder of the transformative experiences that shaped my own love for the ocean.

What marine animal is your favorite?

The Leatherback Sea Turtle, they travel great distances and are a reminder of how connected the oceans are.
