Marissa Gustafson is a lifelong ocean enthusiast whose love for the ocean began in childhood while exploring the shores of Connecticut and Rhode Island. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Marine Science from the University of Connecticut at Avery Point in 2013. During her undergraduate studies, she interned under Dr. Jamie Vaudrey (2011–2012), developing field sampling and laboratory techniques. She also participated in shark and stingray tagging programs in Myrtle Beach, SC (2012), and Clearwater, FL (2013), through C.M.E.R.A.
Marissa’s journey came full circle in 2015 when she joined Project Oceanology as a part-time educator—the very organization that nurtured her early interest in marine science. At the time she was also working for Lebanon Public Schools as a substitute teacher (grades K–12) and paraprofessional at Lyman Memorial High School. She transitioned to a full-time educator role at Project Oceanology in the fall of 2017.
Marissa holds several certifications, including her OUPV captain’s license (2019) and American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (2018). Over the years, she has contributed to multiple grant-funded projects, developed numerous engaging marine science curricula, and represented Project Oceanology through outreach programs such as Facebook Live events and an episode of Poppi’s Planet: Fishing Exploration.
Currently, Marissa serves as the Director of Ocean Explorer Academy, Project Oceanology’s summer day camp for students ages 9–11. This is her favorite time of year, where she combines hands-on learning with summer adventure, helping young ocean lovers connect with the marine world.
Outside of work, Marissa enjoys gardening, spending time outdoors with her two dogs, playing catcher on her women’s softball team, and cheering on her nieces and nephews at soccer games. Since 2014, she has also been a dedicated volunteer with the Lebanon Lions Club, supporting events such as the fishing derby, blood drives, pancake breakfasts, and the Lebanon Country Fair.
What do you love most about Project Oceanology?
Blending science education with fun, Marissa’s passion is experiential education, especially taking students outdoors to explore their local coastal ecosystems. Whether seining for creatures at Bluff Point State Park, spotting harbor seals, or helping a hesitant student proudly hold a crab for the first time, she is deeply committed to sparking curiosity and confidence in young scientists.
What marine animal is your favorite?
Her favorite marine animal in Long Island Sound is the lined seahorse.
